What do you get when you mix a collectible card game, adult cartoons and other people….. You get Animation Throwdown The Quest for Cards.  I was skeptical of this game at first.  Oh how fun could it actually be?  It probably will be meh….. I was wrong.  The game play is fun, even if you don’t spend cash on it you can still build a decent and powerful deck with a good deck master.  You start off the game picking which deck master you want to run.  (Being a huge Futurama fan, I picked Lela).  Than you get your starter deck and you get the basics of the game fairly quickly with the game giving a limited amount preloaded combos for your cards.  Once you use them you will have to research new combos.  The game itself is fun and if you are looking to kill time….. well this will do it.  I have told myself… just one or two hands in the arena…. 10 battles later/ all my adventure points gone, and all my challenges used up for the day…. And what you know my time is gone LOL.  The game itself was announced in June of last year to launch in Quarter 3 of the same year.  So the game is still young and the developers are constantly adding and updating things in the game.

What I wish would come to the game in later updates.  The Cleveland Show for all the family guy, Futurama, American Dad, Bob’s Burgers, King of the Hill.  Why is Cleveland Show not represented at all?  They can’t claim rights issues Cleveland show is owned by Fox Broadcasting.  So would defiantly love to see that.  More playable deckmasters would be nice.  Like Hypnotoad… ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!… Huh.. wha… where was I?  OH YES.  Deckmasters.  Changes of clothes could useful for the deckmasters.  They already proved that they can with the implementation of Ricky Spanish Roger’s psychotic alter ego.

Hopefully in the future the game will add more deckmasters and more combos for the characters.  A character fusion system would be nice also.  But for now I will enjoy what has been given to me from the game.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

GOing for the dream!

Starting your journey Imagine if you will, you are young and experiencing the game of pokemon for the first time.  The graphics for the time are what you would expect of a Gameboy/Gameboy Color/ Gameboy Pocket.  You are thrown into the world of pokemon and you are faced with a choice.  Picking your first pokemon has always and will always be one moment in any of the games that will stick with you.  As you play you imagine what it would be like if you were actually part of this world, only to come crashing back to reality that no pokemon are not real.  Twenty plus years go by and you are greeted with a new game called Pokemon Go.  An app/game where you walk around and collect the characters from your childhood.  But why would you play it.  Why would you throw yourself back into this world.  Well lets see.

1.  It brings you out into the world and not just on your phone trading pokemon via the global trade station (gen 5 and up….. I think).  You get to experience pokemon in the real world for the first time to capture that dream you had so long ago.

2. It’s a couples game.  You’re on a hike in the woods with your sweetheart and one of your phones go off and she excitedly exclaims that she has found a puffy purple thing.  Being the nerd you are you smile and tell her it is a Venonat.  It is bringing couples to places on hikes and walks together.  With charging stations at local monuments and places of importance not just to yards or around your house.  You can litterly go to places of historic value in your town to learn about things.  Parents it will give you a chance to bring your child to places like Washington D.C to the monuments to find pokemon and they will see things that were once boring to them because.  Hey I just caught a Charmander on Abraham Lincoln’s Knee!
2a. Now let me be clear this does not mean you should go traversing through strange people’s yards and you should always be on the look out for danger around you.  But the news is focusing on the bad because it gets more views.  There is danger in no matter what you play or do.  A guy searched a 10 year old’s IP address location and went to the kids house and killed him for headshotting him in a Call of Duty game or whatever First Person Shooter game it was.  So yes there is danger.  Will everyone heed warnings no but that is on them.

3. It’s bringing the nerd community out and about.  With the ability to travel across the land (yes this pun is intended). Nerds are coming out of their dens and dwellings to find things they love.  Someone has asked “Oh how come it takes an app to get people to go outside?  That’s just sad.”  Well my answer to this is.  “Perhaps said person who doesn’t go outside perfers not to deal with people in his area because of being ostracized while young?  Or they feel like staying inside to play console games and interact with the world via microphone and controller.”  This game has given people with anxiety and depression a chance to go out and not feel like they are being judged for enjoying something they love.

While there is strong haters of this game and their points are valid but it doesn’t mean you should hate on it because either you didn’t play it when you were younger or you feel it is endangering peoples lives.  If you are worried about such things.  Play in wide open public places or on hiking trails.  Or at parks.  You don’t have to have your face in the app all the time.  You can set the sleep feature on your phone and put it at your side and it will vibrate when something is close.  (You don’t have to be on top of it to catch it.  You can be a good distance away and still get a chance to catch it.)  As the game states always be aware of your surroundings.

Now get out and GO! If you don’t want to play it.  That is fine and that is your choice.  🙂 I for one am having fun with it.

The fact that Final Fantasy will be reaching it’s fifteenth incarnation with Final Fantasy XV and the release of the “Reclaim Your Throne” Trailer dropping last week.  I figured it was time to write a double top five list.  The top five best and top five worst incarnations of Final Fantasy

Lets get the pain out of the way.

IT’S THE TOP FIVE WORST Final Fantasies.

5. Final Fantasy V: While this is by far not the worst final fantasy it isn’t anywhere close to being the best.  The game itself while enjoyable it doesn’t bring much to the table other more jobs for your characters to play as.  Being a Japan only release on the Super Famicom System.  It would later find it’s way to the state in two ports.  One to Playstation in the Final Fantasy Anthology Collection and than Later on Gameboy Advanced Final Fantasy Advanced. The story behind it was not all that compelling and a bit convoluted.  Play it if you want but this is one game you can skip.

4. Final Fantasy VIII:  While this game has a big following and I may get hate mail for this one.  But I feel that the game was not all that impressive.  The graphics from VII to VIII seemed like they could have done more with it considering how beautiful IX would be following VIII.  The game play mechanics were also choppy.  Adding a pointless timing game “trigger” effect for the gunblade and than Squall’s Limit Breaks also needing to be timed perfectly made using limit breaks tedious.  When ever you switched the party you had to rejunction all their stuff to get what you had previously.  Also let us not forget the crappy draw magic system.  And than their was the trading card game and needing it to get items needed for special weapons.  The big bad was a let down and the main character Squall made Cloud look happy in comparison. I think I had glitched game because Levels came at every 1000 experience points.

3. Final Fantasy III another lackluster title in the Final Fantasy franchise. The story was a tad unfollowable and I found myself lost at times as to what was going on.  It felt like it was trying to pack more into a box than it needed too.  The mechanics were a bit off and could have been more streamlined (it seemed to become more streamlined once it was ported and given an upgrade on the Nintendo DS.

2. Final Fantasy X: The beginning of the perpetual hallway. At first you are treated to mind blowingly beautiful graphics and GASP voice acting.  Here in lies the problem with FFX.  When you start the game you are treated to our main character telling you “Listen to my story.  This may be your last chance.”  You are literally playing through a flashback.  And not from the ending.  The Scene in the opening is as will you find out later on is the mid-way point when you realize your journey to Zanarkend was for naught and just continuing a perpetual loop.  The battle system is oppressively slow with True Turn Based Style instead of the Active Turn Based that came before it and later in X-2 (there was no need for a sequel).  The sphere grid system replaces level so you never know what level you are through out the game.  The voice acting is terrible (While not the worst that would fall to Castlevania Symphony of the night but that was at least entertaining).  The story is pointless and at times seems like the game is trying to tell you abandon religion.  The big boss of the game is hyped as this massive all powerful being but if you play the game you can beat it easily to the point where the boss WILL HEAL YOU.  All for what…. To find out that your main character was noting but a dream conjured by the world.  You are not missing anything if you skip this game.

1. Final Fantasy XIII: While X was a wider hallway XIII is nothing and i mean NOTHING but a narrow hallway.  A TWENTY HOUR LONG HALLWAY and by the end when you get to the open world you don’t even care anymore because by that point the story has collasped in on itself.  The villain is confusing as to what it is and the story plays it up to the fact it is an omnipotent being who’s voice can destroy your mind….. and than you reach your first encounter with the big bad villain and he speaks and you are fine.  The story makes no sense and you are given a vision for a split second so you have no idea what the hell you are supposed to be doing, all you know is you have been tainted and you need to figure out what it wants you to do unless you become a crazy beast thing and kill everyone.  What is your reward for completing your vision.  YOU ARE TURNED TO CRYSTAL.  Oh oh it gets better.  One of your team mates is an awakened crystal…. meaning she has already been rewarded for completing her task.  WHY?!  The game play is what really makes this game the worst in the near 30 year history of this game series.  You control ONE person.  Not the whole party.  You are doomed to not only have to destroy the targets “Quickly” cause a faster battle means more points.  You have to watch your two AI controlled team mates.  Items like potions and remedies become pointless because as soon as the battle ends you are back to full health. Once you get Lightning’s ultimate move the game becomes a cake walk.  The game is beautiful, it has good voice acting….. but why create a beautiful backdrop if we can’t explore it.

Old Vampire Harpy Writings

Posted: July 23, 2015 by hieiyyh2 in Gaming
This post was written by myself for a Vampire: The Masquerade Game that I help run.  The Character was the NPC Harpy of the City of New Orleans.  When I first took on the NPC for my “Rogue’s Gallery” of characters.  I was told to think of him like a proper southern gentlemen with a thick southern Droll.
Penned in the most fine and luxurious ink and penmanship the words of the harpy are wrote.

“I dare say tonight has been most interesting and with those nights when one can smell the change coming in the wind. You batten down the hatchets and weather the storm till it becomes safe to stick your pretty little head out. On this night August the 5th The one known as the Mad Prince of New Orleans stepped down and took her trophy of Anthony Vargoss to places unknown. With recent stories circulating about the acts of the former prince it is hardly an action that anyone did not see coming. Now I am just a simple southerner but I do stand to wonder why she would not have taken the child also. But I digress my dear readers.”

The report carries on

“With the former prince gone who was to take the mantle of Prince? Why, none other than the now former Seneschal her self of course. It is a widely know that the Seneschal is the one who takes up the throne when the prince is out of town or in this case abdicates her thorn. With Sonja Reinhardt comes a mess she must clean and one she realized when she took the seat at bequest of the former prince. With the Seneschal gone and now in full power she could have chosen to go unchecked but instead placed into the advisory and second in command role of Seneschal to the now Former regent of the Tremere Chantry Reginald Winston Barnes. There too was a changing of the guard in the Sheriff’s office. Crassida Henry The Swamp Witch has stepped down and in her stead a new face among the filthy rats has been place one Frankie The Fly. I do hope this sheriff is a good choice seeing as he has big shoes to fill. Sonja also made clear a Scourge was appointed but no name was given. A good strong move to keep us all in check should we try to sink our teeth in the fledgeling prince’s pretty little biker throat.”

“On to the matters of what was discussed. For the first I say is one of something that is creeping out of our past and has come to nip at us like a fire trying to return to it’s former glory. One Isobel Rothery of the Clan of Lunatics brought up a Biker Gang….. Now at first before she continued on with her story one would think bikers are just uncouth rabble of human beings with a leather and gas powered bicycle fetish. But the next part struck me as odd. She continued on to say the leader of the Bikers and one other out of those present at her families Elysia, were holy. Has the inquisition found a new order or is it just coincidence I for one hope i am still around to tell the tale should it unfold. One Naji of the clan of the filthy and deformed spoke up and demanded Diplomacy and trying to bring damned of the faith to try and outweigh kine of the faith. Be it far from my simple self to say that every kindred in the world holds to some faith but it is the faith that we are damned by our greatest common Ancestor who by god was cursed to walk for eternity. Others in the tower have begun looking for ways to skirt and keep tabs and shorten the influence of these religious zealot bikers. An effort I hope proves fruitful.”

“With the coming of questions of the second, the new prince made her first decree. The prince has stripped all the families of the tower of their leaders the primogen council will be going under a maintenance of sorts along with all the domains of the clan being broken down to a two block radius around the family’s Elysia. So please do excuse our dust. This took a lot of those present by storm and some hands one of which is filthy and not deformed but shamed in the eyes of the tower and their clan made a plea. But as the prince stated you may find your primogen now but it will not be made official until next court. A member of the clan of the royal bearing stood forth later to address an issue. One known as Justin Trusdale stood for his clan and asked the blue bloods be relocated to a hotel/casino of which one Blaise De La Fontaine started. The prince allowed this should the Blue bloods be able to secure the position of their new domain. As an aside note to these matters I brought the idea of Isobel Rothery to the forefront once again. The woman I dare say has more balls than most in this city and has a far greater ambition than one would give a lunatic credit for. The idea is a simple one a Common Elysia for all to come and talk shop without having to stand on ceremony each time one wants to enter someone’s family home. An Idea which has another month to grow and become as complete as can be. And knowing Ms. Rothery through various talks she is more than capable of finishing this endeavor she has burdened her self with.”

“The third came with only one asking for the right to bare childer. The Ventrue it seems have called for new blood. One Gerard Lancing a man with impeccable tastes and an air of order and justice about him has asked for and was granted the right to have his retainer one Gabriel Hawke to accept the gracious gift of our blood. I have some reservations about this. But I am not prince and I do not have the right to deny one their rights. So I do hope Mr. Hawke’s transformation goes smoothly.”

“And with the forth none came and with the fifth many came forward to be acknowledged and tolerated in our fair city, in one such case a Gangrel stepped forward and in a bold move The new Sheriff Frankie the fly stepped forward to be her sponsor. Be it a strange move on the sheriff’s part or be it design this Gangrel was acknowledged in our city. I did notice one former primogen acting out of place as if he wanted to present people but was unable but one can only guess if the rabble was simply uncomfortable in a business suit seeing as the Rabbel’s taste is not one of the fancy.”

“No matters of destruction were brought forth…..this time.”

“Now my dear readers I dare say this next bit of gossip was one that has plagued our fine city for many a month. As I told you earlier Anthony Vargoss was secreted away by the former bell prince. To which left the fate of the child one Blaise De La Fontaine. The woman was unstaked and stripped of status down to just acknowledged. Let us watch and see if Blaise returns to that former glory she once had here in the Big Easy.”

“My dearest and most attentive readers I do so hope that you enjoyed reading this and I look forward to bringing you more gossip within the halls of the Elysia.”

Malkavian V20 Cover art

How has Vampire The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition shaped up since it came out?  Well that is a matter of opinion.  Some players view it as the second coming of their favorite game.  Other players view it as bastardized waterdown version missing the glory of revised.  Yet others view it as not the second coming or the death, but as an extension and updating of the lore presented in the game.

My personal view.

V20 (The abbreviation of Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary edition), opened doors for some aspects and closed them on others.  As of this writing, anyone running a strict V20 game (Strict meaning only using V20 books nothing else) only has access to what the current books have out and can not be melded with the previous editions.   So until the clanbooks come out in V20 style, the system has helped some clans and hamstrung other clans.

Example:  Because of V20 the Giovanni no longer have access to spirit slave background and the Proxi Kiss Merit.  Spirit Slaves like ghouls are servants of the Giovanni that can not be seen are only visible say with Auspex or when interacting with their master.  It takes out one of the Necromancers main tools.  The Proxi Kiss Merit: Gives the giovanni access to potence 1 for free at creation or if they took the higher cost version Potence 1 and Fortitude 1 for free at creation.  As wizarding clan this gives the Giovanni more options and makes them less squishy in battle.  Since V20 ripped this away it makes the Giovanni a clan you do not want to play unless you are part of a chronicle that centers around them.

Do not get me wrong I love that Vampire was brought back.  I just hope that with this restructuring of the game, they bring back stuff that made it great.  Give the players more options with their characters.  The clanbooks gave players more information to work with when making their various characters.  Like finding out that the Malkavians as a collective clan stole the use of Dominate as a clan wide discipline from the Ventrue.  Or the reason behind the animosity between The Gangrel and The Ravnos.  Or even that the twisted and grotesque looking Tzimice have access to a magic older than The Tremere’s.

Final Verdict

If you have never played Vampire The Masquerade.  I suggest you go out and play it.  Start with V20 it’s a fresh start for the series and new players can quickly learn the game.  Veteran players use it to meld with your current game if you like.  Or do what my friend Pat did with D&D 3.0 and 3.5 mix together the systems and balance the game that way.  Either way it is a fun night all around.
